Carly was developed by Pure-Seed Testing with American germ plasm and collections from Europe screened in Oregon for early maturity, good crown rust resistance, high seed yield potential, transition, traffic tolerance and exceptional salt tolerance. Carly was also screened in North Carolina for gray leaf spot resistance, heat and drought tolerance.
Carly is a perennial ryegrass that is adapted for permanent turf use as well as overseeding of dormant Bermuda for golf course fairways and tees. Carly can be used in blends with other perennial ryegrasses to add a broader genetic base due to it’s European background. The high seed yield potential makes Carly an easy variety to get production acres placed making it a long-term widely available variety.
Carly is adapted in the northern climates and displays good winter color retention and early spring green-up. Carly applied by itself, in the southern overseeding of dormant bermudagrass, is quick to establish and displays good traffic tolerance. With its early maturity, Carly will offer an easier transition for bermudagrass coming out of winter dormancy. This trait also makes it an excellent component in overseeding blends.
