Spring Oat is the only small grain crop that should be seeded in the spring in Kentucky. They are excellent as a companion crop for establishing legumes or as a supplemental hay or silage crop. They provide cover, reduce soil erosion, reduce weed pressure, and increase organic matter. It grows best on sandy or loamy soils but can also grow in heavy clay and soils with low nutrient value. Oats high quality forage is more palatable than rye or wheat.
